Tussah is a unique silkworm breed in China. There are not many major tussah breeding bases in China. The tussah silkworm grows in the tussah forest. The fresh tussah leaves, which feed on natural tussah leaves, are full of water and are rich in protein, carbohydrate, fat, cellulose and other ingredients. The tussah silkworm babies grow and spin silk and cocoon in the wild under this environment. It can be said that they have absorbed the essence of the earth, the sun and the moon. As a protective barrier for the silkworm chrysalis, the cocoon has naturally evolved more acid and alkali resistance than the mulberry silk in order to resist the sun and rain.

In addition to the impact of natural environment on silkworms, there is also a great threat to silkworms – birds, which peck or eat silkworms to death. In the harsh wild environment, the tussah that can successfully cocoon are high-quality silkworm seeds selected by nature through natural selection, and it is precisely because of various factors that the annual yield of tussah is relatively rare and precious.

1000 silkworms, from birth to cocooning, consume about 20 kilograms of oak leaves and spit out only about 500 grams of silk. It can be seen how rare and precious tussah silk is. 2-3 pounds of silkworm cocoon can only extract up to one pound of silk, and tussah silk is the only natural wild animal protein fiber in the world. The cross-section of its fibers has many capillary pores, which are porous structures; Tussah silk has the advantages of moisture absorption, breathability, and fluffiness compared to mulberry silk.

Tussah silk belongs to natural animal and plant fibers, which are organically converted and synthesized by animals and plants. It is rich in sericin protein and 18 essential amino acids for the human body, and its composition is extremely similar to that of the human skin, earning it the nickname of “second skin”. Having good physiological adaptability to the human body and preventing skin allergies and itching is a rare natural wild resource.

Each tussah silk is formed by the parallel combination of two flat monofilament fibers. Two flat fibers are composed of several fiber bundles, and there are many gaps inside the fiber bundles, forming the porous nature of the fibers. Therefore, more than 38% of the seemingly solid silk is actually hollow. There is a large amount of air in these gaps, forming an air isolation layer. These air prevent heat dissipation and have the function of regulating temperature. They not only have good insulation, but also absorb ultraviolet rays, resist sunlight, and are not suitable for embrittlement.

Wild silkworm silk has strong toughness, good fluffiness, multiple pores in fibers, is not easy to harden, and is light, warm, and comfortable. Tussah silk contains rich sericin and silk fibroin, which have the function of preventing and inhibiting the growth of mites, fungi, and other microorganisms. At the same time, silk has the characteristics of being dust-free and static free.

Tussah silk is a porous fiber that can absorb excess moisture from the air in humid environments and release moisture when the air is dry to maintain appropriate humidity. Tussah silk fibroin has a high nitrogen content and low carbon content. After combustion, it immediately carbonizes without spreading and has a flame retardant effect.
