Chitosan, also known as deacetylated chitin, is obtained by deacetylation of chitin, which is widely present in nature. Its chemical name is polyglucosamine (1-4) -2-amino-B-D glucose.

Since the Frenchman Rouget first obtained chitosan in 1859, this natural polymer has attracted widespread attention from various industries for its excellent properties such as biological functionality and compatibility, blood compatibility, safety, and microbial degradation. It has made significant progress in application research in many fields such as medicine, food, chemicals, cosmetics, water treatment, metal extraction and recovery, biochemistry, and biomedical engineering. Meanwhile, chitosan is included in the national food additive usage standard GB-2760 as a thickener and coating agent.

Chitosan is a semi transparent, flexible, and highly resilient substance found in nature. It is commonly found in the cell walls of fungi, exoskeletons of arthropods (such as shrimp, crabs, and insects), tongue or beak processes of mollusks, and fish scales. Chitosan, similar to cellulose, forms nanofiber or capillary like crystal structures. The scales of bird feathers and butterfly wings often have layered, columnar, or three-dimensional nanocrystalline structures composed of chitosan, which can produce rainbow luster through thin film interference. The head and chest of a butterfly are covered by a hard chitosan plate, while the abdomen is covered by soft chitosan, and the wings are also covered by a layer of chitosan membrane.

It is attached to textile fibers through post-treatment and is one of the methods to increase the added value of textiles. After deacetylation of chitosan, the highly reactive amino group (- NH2) can react chemically with many harmful gases, capturing and decomposing toxic gases such as formaldehyde and TVOC in the air, and converting them into water and organic compounds oxime.
